Religion and Faith

You may or may not be familiar with religion or faith in a higher power. But the difference between the two is when you have faith in something or someone, you put unconditional confidence, love, and trust in that.

Religion, on the other hand, has a set of rituals and beliefs you abide by. You may not have the entire trust, but you follow the rules of that religion and ideology.

So, the phenomenon of hearing unexplained voices is common among those with general faith in their spiritual beliefs and religious people; some connect your hearing to God's voice.

But depending on someone's character and values, these voices could also relate to evil or demonic influences.

If you are religious and of strong faith, you may be hearing God's voice.

Hearing, however, is not the only way you can receive God's words, as we can focus on mediated immediacy.

Mediated immediacy

Mediated immediacy is the dominant way people perceive God today. This includes hearing voices, seeing images, reading words, and listening to music.

However, we are often unaware of how much mediation takes place in what we think of as immediate experiences of God. Additionally, some of us don't understand that there is always some degree of mediation involved.

For example, we hear voices because our ears pick up sound waves; we see images because light waves strike our eyes; we read words because our brains translate those sounds into meaning; and we listen to music because it enters our bodies via vibrations.

We are aware of the mediations involved in each of these processes, but we rarely recognize the role of mediation in our perceptions of God and how he communicates with us.

Direct encounters with God

Direct meetings are less common than mediated immediacy. Some of us claim to have had direct encounters with God, but such claims are usually based on a misunderstanding of what constitutes a "direct encounter."

An immediate meeting does not mean that you are physically touching God. Rather, it refers to a moment where you sense something about God without going through the interpretation process.

An example might be when you suddenly understand why you've been going through life so confused. You don't really know what happened until you stop thinking about it and just experience it directly.

Hearing voices are one of our most common ways of connecting directly. They help us express ourselves, keep others updated about our thoughts and feelings, and give us information about things happening around us.

But how do we know whether those voices are real or just imagined? And how do we know what is a genuine voice from God and a demonic deception?

The Bible and other religious texts clearly explain how to interpret voices. They teach us that some voices are actually demonic spirits masquerading as angels of light.

Nevertheless, there are problems with interpreting voices as revelatory, so what is the advice for dealing with them?

In Christianity, God speaks to His people through His word. He wants you to know what He says about you. In fact, He says it over and over again, and you are called to listen carefully. There are a few ways God can communicate through prayer, including:

  • Telling us His thoughts.
  • Revealing our character.
  • Giving us wisdom.
  • Helping us make decisions.
  • Encouraging us.
  • Comforting us.

In a religion like Christianity, faith is important. The scripture tells followers that God speaks to them in different ways. Sometimes he guides us through dreams, visions, angels, prophets, signs, etc. There are even instances where he speaks directly to you.

For example, Jesus told his followers, "I am with you always." He didn't say, "I'm here now," or "You're doing great!"

This shouldn't be perceived as a one-time event either. God continues to reach out and speak. He doesn't stop because we've sinned or fallen asleep. He still talks to us today. And He'll continue to talk to us tomorrow and every day after that.

So, what does this mean if you have faith in religion or an ideology? Shouldn't we expect to hear God speak in our everyday life?

His followers are His beloved children

If God truly loves us, wouldn't he want to talk to us? Wouldn't He want to guide us? Wouldn't He want us to ask questions? Why wouldn't He answer our prayers?

His children may receive messages regularly but aren't aware of how he is reaching out. It could be through your consciousness, or if you've prayed for a new job role and received an offer the same day, it could be Him directly contacting you.

God has been speaking to His people throughout time

Throughout history, God has been speaking to people. Some of them heard Him clearly, while others didn't. But regardless, He doesn't quit on his children, so why should we quit on Him?
